Clinical Supervision for Therapists and Counsellors
Clinical supervision assists mental health professionals, such as counsellors and therapists by offering support and oversight from a more experienced practitioner. In order to be registered with either the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), members must complete a minimum number of therapy hours under clinical supervision.

Why is Supervision Important?
Professional supervision is vital for good counsellors and therapists as it sharpen a therapist’s diagnostic skills, provides space to review client care, encourages practitioner self-care, and assists with the enhancements of clinical skills and treatment options.
In essence, supervision promotes good practice. It focuses on therapists work with their clients. Practitioners should expect the following outcomes from clinical supervision:
- Reviewal and evaluation of client cases through discussion, report and observation
- Assistance to identify solutions to problems
- Improve practice and increase understanding of professional and clinical issues
- Ensures professional standards are maintained and that policies and procedures of the mental health profession are upheld

About Supervisor Susan Lackner
As an ACA Accredited Supervisor, I have the necessary training and skills in order to assist you as a supervisee. I am a practicing therapist, who specialises in Couples Therapy and hold the highest degree in this field, a Masters Degree in Social Science and Couple Counselling. I also have a Bachelor Degree in Psychology. I was awarded a Scholarship in my Master’s Degree in Couple Counselling in recognition of the highest achieving graduate in post Graduate Counselling.
I have extensive experience in clinical therapy and have been working in the field for over 15 years. I have also created my own Practice and understand the challenges of working in private practice.
I am extremely passionate about working with therapists, to assist them to develop their skills and be masters in their field. I currently supervisor a number of therapists, as well as partner with Swinburne University to provide internships to third year students who are completing their Masters of Couple Counselling degree; and consequently have a comprehensive understanding of the developmental needs of this group.
Supervision is a passion of mine, as I strongly believe it is imperative that we nurture and nourish therapists to enable them to feel supported and become outstanding practitioners in their specialty, particularly in the field of Couple Therapy. It is my belief that supervision should support, teach, challenge and help us grow as practitioners and human beings.
